The Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that growers in the 13 reporting states planted 873,000 acres of potatoes in 2026. That is 29,000 acres less than they planted in 2025, a 3.2% reduction. It is 59,400 acres less than the five-year average planted area in the same states. 

Eight states reported a downturn in this year’s planted area, including: 

  • Idaho (-15,000 acres)

  • North Dakota (-3,000 acres)

  • Colorado (-2,000 acres)

  • Michigan (-2,000 acres)

  • Minnesota (-2,000 acres)

  • Nebraska (-2,000 acres) 

  • Wisconsin (-2,000 acres)

  • California (-1,000 acres)

Potato acreage in Florida, Maine, Oregon, Texas, and Washington is unchanged from the previous year. 

No states reported an increase. USDA’s planted area estimate falls 4,000 acres below North American Potato Market News' June 4 forecast. 

U.S. packers shipped 1.677 million cwt of table potatoes during the week ending June 27. That is down from 1.695 million cwt shipped a year earlier. Michigan packers shipped 57,784 cwt during the week ending June 20. That is up from 31,413 cwt shipped during the same week in 2025. Last week’s reported Michigan shipments were 96.1% russets, 3.1% yellow potatoes, and 0.8% Red potatoes.

USDA reports that Michigan packers are selling size A russets in 10-pound bags for mostly $10-$11 per 50-pound bale, unchanged from a week ago. They are selling size A russets in 5-pound bags for mostly $11-$12 per 50-pound bale, also unchanged. Wisconsin packers are selling size A russet potatoes in 10-pound bags for $7.50-$8 per 50-pound bale, unchanged from last week. They are selling russet 40-70 count cartons for mostly $15-$17 per 50-pound box, up from $14-$15 per 50-pound box a week ago. The weighted average shipping point price for Idaho Russet Norkotahs is $12.17 per cwt, up from $11.48 per cwt the previous week.
