The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates that potato growers produced 412.06 million cwt of potatoes during 2025. That is 9.11 million cwt less than the 2024 crop, a 2.2% decline. Nine of the 13 reporting states posted reduced production this year. USDA puts the 2025 national average potato yield at 461 cwt per acre, 6 cwt more than the 2024 average yield.

USDA estimates Michigan’s harvested area totaled 47,000 acres, which is 500 acres less than growers harvested in 2024. At 430 cwt per acre, this year’s yield estimate matches the 2024 yield. That puts Michigan’s 2025 potato crop at 20.21 million cwt, down 1.1% from 2024 production.

Total U.S. table potato movement has been strong ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. However, increased shipments from Idaho have resulted in reduced sales from most other shipping regions. Other major shipping regions posted 4.4% to 35.5% reductions in movement. Table potato supplies are backing up in most areas.

Last week’s reported Michigan shipments were 91.9% russets and 8.1% yellow potatoes.
