Though Michigan growers were able to finish planting earlier than usual, below-average temperatures held back crop development during May. Temperatures have warmed up during the past 10 days. Cool weather helped store Michigan’s remaining chip potatoes longer than usual. The state still has a substantial volume of potatoes in storage. Some potatoes have been dumped. NAPMN estimates that Michigan growers planted 46,000 acres of potatoes this year. That is 2,000 acres less than USDA’s estimate for the 2024 crop. Both chip potato and table potato acreage are expected to be down. USDA will release its first estimate of the 2025 potato area in its June Acreage report, on June 30.

Canada had an estimated 26.94 million cwt of potatoes from the 2024 crop in storage on June 1. That is 1.80 million cwt more than year-earlier holdings, a 7.2% increase.
