Colorado potato beetle (CPB) is one of the most destructive pests in potato production. These “super pests” can completely defoliate plants, reducing yield and profitability. CPB have swept the U.S., wreaking havoc on potato crops and leading to a long rap sheet of devastating outbreaks.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison deemed the CPB a super pest because it has a deep pool of diversity within its genome that allows different populations to quickly develop resistance to control methods. As of 2022, the CPB has developed resistance to more than 50 different kinds of insecticides.
Identifying CPB
Adults are oval-shaped, about 3/8 inch long, with yellowish-white wings marked by narrow black stripes. Females lay clusters of bright yellow-orange eggs on the underside of leaves, which hatch into brick-red larvae that later turn pink. Both larvae and adults feed aggressively on foliage, and older larvae cause up to 75% of feeding damage. Potatoes are most vulnerable during tuber bulking, making timely control critical.
